Innovation is definitely one thing that can be done in the automotive sector to help it, so it is not a bad suggestion, but it can not be a sole solution for such a complex set of problems. In contrast, the web industry (which is a loosely-defined term itself!) can adopt innovations much faster...so the idea of innovation solving many issues seems more reasonable.

These are two very different industries though, with very different goals and agendas, comparing them directly is never going to be very realistic. Good article Matt.

@Grant: In general, I don't think there's anything wrong with making a few suggestions or observations of one industry, from another. Honestly, it's a really helpful discussion to have (and why blogs are so fun for conversation).

Rather, I just think when we define solutions too loosely (i.e. "innovation" == "anything that's good"), we don't do the topic enough justice.

Great perspective. I'm often guilty of "armchair quarterbacking" as Tom said. It's easy to do and comes with a few moments of self-satisfaction.

At the same time, I think a lot of the discussion lately about the auto industry is warranted in that it often takes someone from outside the "inner-circle", so-to-speak, to provide some new perspective.

Well argued, well written and a great point. I've often been frustrated with any group from the outside armchair quarterbacking another.

Getting cut up in this portfolio thing as well so thanks for the post and the positive notes. Its always good to see the BIGGER picture.
On a separate note, coming from Canada and that hulu service that you are using is not available to me. It can only be streamed within US :(

Dude, your video isn't available outside of the U.S. - I can't watch it. I empathise with a lot of the other points you've made because I take a long time over my own site's redesigns (particularly the current one - which seems to be going for some sort of record! Haha!)

<blockquote>"Time spent writing, speaking, and being active about my company and firm is far more valuable than falling into the stereotype of the self-obsessed, “continual portfolio re-designer.”</blockquote>

Great reminder. I'm basically in the final moments of building a new site for my studio and it has been a tiresome process. Like you said, when I think clearly about the whole thing, a lot of the energy spent was wasted. Certain things needed to happen, but I make a terrible client for myself.

Matt, you didn't mention time-tracking, though I assume you could use Basecamp for that purpose. Personally, I use <a href="http://getharvest.com/" rel="nofollow">Harvest</a> because it offers very easy tracking through an OS X Dashboard widget and excellent reporting + invoicing tools. I ran with Blinksale for my company's first year in the business, but at $12/mo, Harvest had more features and what I believe is a much better user experience than Blinksale. You may want to give Harvest a spin.
