Design is a process

By Matt Brown — 1

Kottke nails something I’ve been feeling for quite a while — design is a process, not just a fixed deliverable. It’s a garden to be tended and not simply an act of creation or production.

It’s far to easy to get trapped refining something for a deadline, instead of taking a step back to consider the lifecycle of a design and how it will grow and change over time. Congrats, Jason, on the 10 year blog anniversary.

Well noted Matt, unfortunately the ‘process’ part is commonly overlooked by Clients (or Clients that are un-informed by designers they’ve worked with in the past). Any good designer should be responsible for the clarification of design as a process, not in a blunt, direct way to the Client, but to keep it in mind at all times.

Although based on the different topic of ‘sites needing redesigns and hiring a pro for the job’, my recent article also mentions this point, essentially:

Yes, sites can be static, but we don’t live in a static world. ” and… “Good web design will not only address your immediate needs but should accommodate some of your goals for the future too.”
